Welcome to Class 2                             Mrs Wright and Mrs Ball

Class Information

Hello and welcome to Class 2's web-page.

We are kicking off our school year with the fascinating Geography topic of 'Passport to the World' with a focus on Kenya and the African Savannah.   Where appropriate we will link this topic to other subjects across the curriculum.  For more detail about our curriculum plans for this term please see our subject overview below.

Do keep an eye on our Twitter feed @mwpsclass2 to see what we are getting up to!

Please do feel free to talk to us about any questions or concerns you have.  We are happy to talk over the phone, respond to emails or make an appointment after school.

Many thanks,

Mrs Wright and Mrs Ball

Some Useful Information for Class 2

We cannot emphasis enough how important reading with your child is when they are developing their reading strategies in Year 2!  Children need to read regularly to an adult for about 10 minutes at home each day where possible.

The children have been directed to choose a reading book from our selection at school and will bring this home, along with their reading record, every day.   We will endeavour to write the title of the book in their reading record.  Please make sure that reading books and records are brought into school every day.   Please write a comment in your child's reading record and let us know how they are getting on.  Sometimes you might find, if they are tired or less confident with the text, that they may prefer to read aloud together with you, or read alternate pages with you.  In class we aim to read at least once a week with each child, twice, if possible.

Please do continue encouraging your child to read other texts alongside their school reading book.  You will also notice that reading a bed-time story every night to them, will have a huge impact on their vocabulary and understanding of literature, as well as having many other benefits.

Spellings will be given out every Friday; your child will have a short spelling test within their spelling session and then they will be given new words which link in with the teaching for the following week.  Phonics remain a crucial part of your child’s reading and spelling development, a handy guide to them can be found in the middle pages of the reading record.

Number Facts Homework

Key number facts will be given out on a Friday and this will come home in the same book as your child’s spellings.  Please support your child with learning the number facts so they can recall them mentally.  These facts will be covered during lessons although regular practice is always helpful!

The children have daily maths lessons following the whole school 'Teaching for Mastery' approach.  By the end of Year 2, they should know their 2x, 5x and 10x tables.  We will be playing daily Maths games outside of the main lesson to build fluency and develop engagement for the subject.

We use a combination of 'Talk for Writing' and the 'Write Stuff' to accelerate progress of writing and have lots of exciting writing topics planned.

PE & Woodland Schools

Our 'PE Ready' day is currently a Friday.  Please send your child to school in PE kit (a school jumper, their white PE top, joggers, socks and trainers would be perfect for this time of year).  Please ensure long hair is tied up and earrings removed / tape provided.  The children will stay in PE kit for the whole day on a Friday.
