Welcome to Class 6                 Class Teacher:  Mrs Eaton

I hope you had a lovely Christmas break.  Welcome to Spring term 2020!

This term our topic is the Industrial Revolution – we will be learning about how our local area contributed to this huge change in society and trying to answer the question: 'Was Britain a better place to live in 1900 compared to 1750?'

We will begin our English lessons this term with Mr Men Stories! We will then be doing Newspapers and Narrative Poems.  Alongside these genres we will also be taking part in the Shrewsbury Book Award.  This involves reading up to six books and choosing a favourite along with several other schools in Shropshire, as well as taking part in three different competitions linked to the books.

Our Science topics are 'Electricity' and 'Light.'

Design and Technology/Art and Design

In D and T we be learning about alarms and making an alarm system linked to Science and History!  In Art and Design we will be studying Lowry.

PSHE topics this term are 'Responsibility' and 'Respect.'

In RE we are discussing the following questions: 'How is belief expressed through symbols and action?'

Outdoor PE this term will be on Wednesday afternoons.  For indoor PE, we will be doing Zumba/Street Dance.  Please ensure your PE kit remains in school from Monday to Friday every week and you have the correct school PE kit of white T shirt, dark bottoms and a pair of trainers, as you never know when we might do a cheeky PE session!  In the second half term, we will be swimming up at WBS as well as taking part in one other PE activity.

A word about SATS...

I know many of you will be anxious about the upcoming SATs and preparing for secondary school, but myself and Mrs Hawthorn are on hand to support you every step of the way, to ensure that you are pushing yourself to reach your maximum potential and showing everyone just how brilliant you are!

Please support your child by encouraging them to read as often as possible, recording any reading in their Reading Log book, this includes newspapers/comics.

Children will receive homework on Punctuation/ Grammar and Maths every Wednesday, which is due in on Monday mornings.  Please encourage your child to complete their homework on a Wednesday or a Thursday night so that if they have any problems completing it, they can ask myself or Mrs Hawthorn for help before it is due in on a Monday morning.

We are continuing with our spelling scheme: ‘Read Write Inc.’

To support the learning of spellings, the children will be given two spelling books to practise their spellings for the week: one to be kept in school for morning spelling practice each day, the other to be brought to school each Monday to stick in the new weekly spelling grid, then returned home to practise spellings at home each night.  Each book will have a grid where children can practise their spellings using a 'look, cover, write, check' method.  On Friday they will receive a test on a random selection of these words.  Please encourage your child to bring their 'Home spelling book' home every Monday and to practise their spellings each evening using the 'look, cover, write, check method.'

Many thanks in advance for all your support.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come and see me.
